Obituary: Mary E. Mitchell, 59, of Newtown

Mary started her teaching career as a substitute teacher for Newtown schools. She also taught in Danbury and New Milford.

NEWTOWN, CT — Mary E. Mitchell, age 59 of Newtown, passed away at Hartford Hospital on Friday, January 11, 2019.

Mary was born on October 1, 1959 in Summit, New Jersey. She was the daughter of the late Alan R. and Frances (Williams) . She graduated from Madison High School and then attended Bucknell University where she earned her degree in elementary education. While at Bucknell, she was a member of Delta Phi Epsilon. She continued her education by a earning a master's degree in Special Education at Southern Connecticut State University.

Mary enjoyed needlework, reading, making jewelry for her friends and spending time with her niece and nephew. Anyone who knew Mary, knew of her love for animals, basset hounds in particular. Over the years she adopted many basset hounds from various rescue organizations.

Mary was a member of Trinity Church for 38 years. She worked with the youth group, assistant treasurers and enjoyed attending for Foyer gatherings at the church.

Mary started her teaching career as a substitute teacher for Newtown schools. Taught Danbury GED adult education classes and worked with students at Fairfield Hills Hospital helping patients to attain their goals. Mary taught in the New Milford school system for 19 years. She loved working with her special education students.

Mary is survived by sister Laura M. Mathey, brother-in-law Edward of Brookfield, and their children; brother Alan R Mitchell Jr. and his wife Sally of Danbury and their family; and by her dog Gus.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 19th at 10 a.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, 36 Main St., Newtown. Interment will be in Newtown Village Cemetery following the service. A reception for friends and family will follow at Trinity.Friends may visit at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown, Friday, January 18th, 5 to 8 p.m.Contributions in her memory may be made to: Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary, PO Box 3571, Newtown, CT 06470.
