Results in Newtown Budget Referendum Finalized

Road repairs, teacher salaries and pickleball were all on the line

NEWTOWN, CT — Taxpayers have approved both the $78,104,410 school and $42,1 79,503 municipal budgets at a public referendum on Tuesday. Requested funding for new pickleball courts came up short, however.

A new boiler and lighting at Hawley School was approved, for $780,000. An additional $2.7 million for lighting and boiler replacement was needed, and approved, for Newtown High School. Voters also gave a thumbs up to a request for $1 million to improve town roads.

The taxpayers nixed a $290,000 proposition to build pickleball courts at Fairfield Hills — even with an anonymous pledge of $25,000 to offset some of the cost.
