Road Delays Expected As Newtown Begins Chip Seal Program Next Week

The town's annual chip seal program is expected to begin next week, weather permitting.

NEWTOWN, CT — Drivers in Newtown should expect delays on several roads as the town begins its 2026 chip seal program next week.

The Department of Public Works said single chip seal surface treatment with Fogseal is scheduled to begin the week of July 20, weather permitting.

The annual program is designed to improve roadway safety and overall pavement conditions by applying a protective wearing surface to existing pavement. According to the town, chip sealing is a cost-effective way to extend the life of roadways.

During chip seal operations and for several days afterward, motorists should reduce their speed to 15 mph, according to the Department of Public Works. Officials said slowing down helps minimize damage from loose gravel, reduces the risk of flying rocks and allows the new road surface to properly compact and cure.

The town thanked residents for their patience during the project.
