Single-Car Crash In Newtown Results In Major Vehicle Damage

A Newtown motorist narrowly escaped a dire accident while traveling on slick roads in town.

NEWTOWN, CT — A motorist narrowly escaped a dire accident while traveling on slick roads in Newtown.

On Jan. 24, the driver of a 2008 Toyota Rav4 was heading southbound on Old Hawleyville Road just north of Richmond Road, navigating a wet surface, when she lost control while descending a hill, according to police.

The car veered off the roadway, ascending over the curb and guardrail along the right shoulder, according to police. The undercarriage of the Toyota became entangled with the guardrail, leaving the rear end lodged in a wooded area. The car ultimately came to a rest, leaning toward its right side.

The crash resulted in heavy damage to the front end and undercarriage of the Toyota, with parts of the undercarriage and exhaust system torn off. A ruptured fuel tank caused gasoline to leak onto the roadway. Police called in the Hawleyville Fire Department, and crews successfully mitigated the gasoline spill.

Newtown EMS conducted a medical evaluation of the driver, who declined transport to a hospital.
