State Leaders Honor Newtown Resident & WWII Vet On 101st Birthday

Just days from his 101st birthday, leaders ​from Washington, D.C. and Hartford came together to honor Newtown resident Will Petrone.

NEWTOWN, CT — At the age of 19, Will Petrone went to war, becoming a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving in the 751st Field Artillery Battalion.

On Thursday, five days from his 101st birthday, leaders from Washington, D.C. and Hartford came together to honor him for his service, at his home in Newtown.

The World War II veteran was presented with a medal of the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara and a Certificate of Special Recognition by Sen. Blumenthal's Office.

In addition to Blumenthal, Petrone was fêted by State Reps. Mitch Bolinsky and Martin Foncell; State Sen. Tony Hwang; Newtown First Selectman Jeff Capeci; Brigadier General Ron Welch U.S. Army (Ret.), Commissioner Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs; CSM Arthur Fredericks, the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for the Connecticut National Guard; and other state ad local dignitaries.

The festivities were held at Maplewood at Newton where Petrone is a resident.
