Surge in Background Checks, Gun Sales Reported by FBI: Report

Data from the FBI shows an increase in gun purchases after the Sandy Hook shootings as well as those in the Washington Navy Yard and Aurora.

NEWTOWN, CT — New data from the FBI is showing that 2016 will set a record for background checks for gun purchases, according CNN Money.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation reported Wednesday that in April alone, there were more than 2 million background checks, a 25 percent increase from April of 2015, the report stated.

The FBI background check data shows that gun sales are on the rise since the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in which 20 children and 6 educators were killed.

Newtown-based advocacy groups such as Newtown Action Alliance and Sandy Hook Promise have been pushing for new legislation since the shooting.
