Thieves Broke Into Mailbox in Front of Town Hall: Newtown PD

NEWTOWN, CT — Police are investigating the vandalism of another mailbox in town.

The incident occurred Aug. 19. A mail box outside Town Hall on Main Street was broken into and all the mail inside taken.

It is the latest in a series of cases in which a mailbox was broken into. On April 28, someone broke into and stole mail from the box outside the post office on Commerce Road. Vandals also struck a more than a dozen mailboxes in the area of Charter Ridge Drive on May 8, and several curbside mailboxes around Yogananda Street on June 2.

Mailboxes are protected by federal law, and crimes against them and the mail they contain are considered a federal offense, according to the U.S. Postal Service. Violators can be fined up to $250,000 or imprisoned for up to three years for each act of vandalism.
