Vehicle Rolls Over, Lands In Newtown Yard After Going 100 Yards Off Road: Police

NEWTOWN, CT — A driver was taken to the hospital after his vehicle traveled about 100 yards off a Newtown road, rolled over and landed on its roof in a nearby yard, according to police.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 5:12 p.m. Aug. 5 on Berkshire Road near Chestnut Hill Road, according to a Newtown Police Department accident report.

Police said the driver was traveling east on Berkshire Road when the vehicle left the roadway, entered a ditch and continued through an area covered with brush and trees.

The vehicle traveled approximately 100 yards before rolling over and coming to rest on its roof in the yard of a home on Chestnut Hill Road, according to the report.

The driver told police that a westbound vehicle had come close to the center line, causing him to swerve right to avoid a potential collision.

However, a witness who had been traveling behind the vehicle told police that the driver had been swerving before going off the road and disputed the driver's account of another vehicle approaching the center line, according to the report.

Police said the driver showed no signs of alcohol or narcotic intoxication at the scene. According to the report, the driver and EMS personnel believed he had fallen asleep behind the wheel.

The driver did not report any specific injuries but was taken by Newtown EMS to Danbury Hospital for further evaluation.

The vehicle sustained heavy, disabling damage in the rollover, and multiple airbags deployed. It was towed from the scene.

Police determined the driver was at fault and issued him a written warning for failure to maintain the proper lane of travel.
