Verbal Dispute Escalates to Violence In Latest Newtown Police Blotter

NEWTOWN, CT — Third-degree assault charges top the Newtown Police blotter for the beginning of December.

Newtown Police responded to a report of an assault at a Covered Bridge Road location on Dec. 5.

According to police, Malcolm Bryant, 59, of Main Street, and Christopher Enea, 56, of Apple Tree Lane in Brewster, NY, got into a verbal altercation that escalated to violence.

Police say Enea struck Bryant in the neck and face several times after Bryant blocked Enea's path by placing his foot in front of a doorway as Enea went to exit, resulting in Enea being hit in the head with the door.

Both men reported minor injuries but refused medical attention.

Police charged Bryant with disorderly conduct, and Enea with third-degree assault. Both men are scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on Dec. 19.


At 11:37 p.m. on Dec. 3, Newtown police say a Farnwood Road man was nearly crushed while loading goods into the back of his Genesis GV70 parked in the lot of 104 Church Hill Rd in front of the Nite & Day Sports Cards and Collectables business.

A Southbury motorist began to back his Nissan Frontier up into the Genesis, causing the door to close on the other man, and pinning him between the door and the car. The Newtown man sustained minor injuries but refused medical aid at the scene, according to police.

The Southbury driver was arrested and charged with DUI.


Police issued an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart to a Newtown driver in a Dodge Ram Tradesman at 6:48 a.m. on Dec. 4.

The truck was traveling westbound on Botsford Hill Road, approaching the traffic light at the intersection with South Main Street, and struck another Newtown man driving a Subaru Forester. The Subaru sustained heavy damage to the back bumper/back window and had to be towed from the scene, according to police. The Dodge sustained minor damage to the front bumper and was able to leave the scene without a tow.

Police issued the Dodge driver an infraction for failure to a drive reasonable distance apart.


Police report a 58-year-old Maine woman driving a Ford Escape rear ended a 66-year-old Southbury man in a Nissan Altima who was was stopped at the stop sign in the northbound lane of Key Rock Rd at Sugar Street at 6:08 p.m. on Dec. 1. Both vehicles were damaged, but no injuries were reported.


Police report a 61-year-old Oak Ridge Drive woman in a GMC Yukon was sideswiped by an unknown motorist who crossed the center line on Sugar Street, around 5:23 p.m. on Dec. 2. The woman was not injured, and the evading driver has not been identified.


Police report a 17-year-old Brookfield motorist traveling northbound on Hanover Road turned right off the road and into a tree, around 11:09 p.m. on Dec. 3, according to police. He was examined by EMS on scene but declined transport to the hospital. Police issued the driver a verbal warning.


A Woodbury resident pulling her Hyundai Elantra out of a driveway on Edmond Road just north of Church Hill Road shortly after 8 p.m. on Dec. 8 collided with a Subaru Impreza driven by a Danbury woman, police said.

The front end of the Hyundai struck the left front fender area of the Subaru, which sustained heavy denting to its left front fender area, according to police.

Both cars could be driven from the scene, and neither driver claimed injuries as a result
of this accident.

Police issued a verbal warning to the Hyundai driver for failure to grant the right of way at a driveway.


No injuries were reported after an 80-year-old Newtown woman drove her Hyundai Kona SEL into the rear of a Kia Seltos SX driven by a 20-year-old Weston woman around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 8. Both cars were in a Queen Street parking lot at the time of the collision. No enforcement was authorized.


On Dec. 8 at 8:51 p.m., the Newtown Police Department responded to a call of a single car accident in the area of 34 Jeremiah Road.

Upon arrival, the vehicle was found to be unoccupied, with no witnesses to the accident
present. Following further investigation, police identified a 37-year-old Lakeview Terrace man as the car's driver.

Police charged the man with evading responsibility/injury or property damage and failure to maintain proper lane of travel. He was released from police custody on a written promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court on Dec. 22.


A 39-year-old Waterbury man was travelling westbound on Wasserman Way between Trades Lane and Mile Hill South when he crossed over the eastbound lane and struck a tree, shortly after noon on Dec. 10. There was minor damage to the town landscaping at 3 Primrose Street, and the driver was taken to Danbury Hospital for injuries. He was issued an infraction ticket for failing to keep right on a curve.


Shortly before 10 a.m. on Dec. 10, the Newtown Police Department responded to a Nearbrook Drive residence for a report of a domestic disturbance.

Following an investigation, police charged Garrett Hydeck, 34, with third-degree assault, disorderly conduct and two counts of risk of injury to a minor. Hydeck was released from police custody after posting 10 percent of a $1000 bond, and scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on Dec. 11.
