Veteran Yoga Instructor and Columbia University Pediatric Occupational Therapist Opens Inner Child Yoga in Newtown

Barbara Burton's new yoga and therapy studio offers classes, summer camp, for kids to "stretch, breathe and grow" to their full potential

Newtown, CT, June 10, 2016 -- Inner Child Yoga has opened its doors in Newtown at 97 South Main Street, offering a variety of yoga classes and a summer camp for children to foster relaxation and mindfulness; physical, mental and emotional strength and endurance; and coordination and body awareness. The beautiful new 2,000 square foot business features a large yoga studio, a sensory motor gym, and private rooms for yoga and occupational therapy sessions.

Inner Child Yoga is owned by yogi and pediatric occupational therapist Barbara (“Barbie”) K. Burton (MS, OTR/L, RYT), a leading expert in the central nervous system, sensory processing strategies, and the body/brain connection, which enables her to provide an extraordinary, powerful and fun yoga experience for children of all ages.

According to Burton, a Sandy Hook mother of three young children, “My goal for Inner Child Yoga is to nurture children to stretch, breathe and grow to their full potential and provide a really fun, healthy and creative curriculum that will give them lifelong tools for relaxation, stress relief, mindfulness, and body awareness. I feel enormous joy helping children discover the power of yoga for their mind and body, allowing them a moment of peace and stillness in such a fast-paced world.”

Inner Child Yoga also has an Occupational Therapy (OT) division run by Burton, a Columbia University-trained Pediatric OT specializing in sensory processing disorders and brain-based therapy. The facility features a sensory motor gym and private therapy rooms designed for one-on-one sessions and hands-on service to support children with special needs. Among the services offered: OT evaluation; home programing; sensory diet consultation; Integrated Listening System (iLs); private yoga sessions; and MNRI reflex integration.

Burton has been in practice as an OT for over 20 years, and has been teaching yoga for 12 years. She has had her own OT practice since 2004. Early on, she introduced yoga into her practice as a vehicle for siblings of clients with special needs to join in the process and enjoy an activity together. She began teaching yoga classes as a volunteer at her children’s preschools and, since 2013, has been leading yoga groups with students at Sandy Hook School, including her own kids who go to school there.
