NEWTOWN, CT — Fans in Newtown can’t see the action in person, but can still find plenty of places to watch the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the world’s biggest soccer tournament.

Fans from around the globe will come to North America for matches that are being played across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The 2026 World Cup runs 39 days, starting Thursday, June 11, and ending July 19. For the first time, the tournament will feature 48 teams, making it the largest World Cup ever.

Eleven U.S. cities — Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Rutherford, New Jersey — are hosting matches.

Given the massive popularity of the World Cup, sports bars across the country are expected to draw large and energetic crowds.

Some to consider near Newtown include:

  • Cover Two Sports Cafe (Sandy Hook): Cover Two Sports Cafe has embraced the World Cup throughout the tournament and will show Team USA's Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 1. The longtime sports bar features numerous TVs, a full bar and a menu of game-day favorites, making it a popular gathering spot for local soccer fans.
  • Elicit Brewing Co. (Danbury): Just a short drive from Newtown, Elicit Brewing is continuing its World Cup festivities with a Team USA watch party on Wednesday, July 1, as the Americans face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. The brewery will show the match on its large screens while offering its full food and drink menu, with no cover charge.
  • O'Brien's Sports Pub & Restaurant (Danbury): O'Brien's is also hosting a Team USA watch party beginning at 8 p.m. Wednesday, featuring the U.S.-Bosnia and Herzegovina match with game audio throughout the restaurant, tequila tastings and giveaways.

With the World Cup continuing through July 19, the three venues are also expected to continue hosting match watch parties or showing tournament games as teams advance through the knockout rounds.
