YACKO TREE SERVICE FORESTER VISITS ALABAMA

Hello Newtown and greetings from Alabama!  Your "Ask the Arborist" editor is vacationing this weekend in his hometown of Pinson, Alabama (Pinson is outside Birmingham, AL).  In our Special vacation edition of "Ask the Arborist" I have a surprise tree called the Fringetree.  The photos are taken in my parents back yard and as you can see the trees in Alabama have already leafed out.  The Fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus) according to information from "The University of Florida IFAS Extension service considers this one of the most beautiful small tree when in full bloom.  The oval rounded form adds dark green color in the summer, with bright white flowers in spring.  Fringe Trees can reach a height of 12 - 20 feet with crown spread of 10 - 15 feet, making it an  ideal choice  for landscape planting.  Fringe Trees like full sun, part sun or part shade.  Best soil is well drained , occasionally wet and slightly acidic.  Fringe Trees will survive in USDA hardiness zones 3A - 9B so yes this is a great selection for our 6A USDA hardiness zone in Newtown, CT.  Please enjoy the photos and stay tuned to more editions of "Ask the Arborist" on location from sweet home Alabama.
