NORTH BRANFORD, CT — In April, North Branford police detectives began an investigation into a reported sexual assault of a child.

According to police, following a comprehensive and victim-centered investigation led by Detective Massimo Piroli, conducted in partnership with the Yale Child Study Center and the Connecticut Department of Children and Families, and with assistance from the New Haven State's Attorney's Office, investigators developed sufficient probable cause to seek criminal charges.

As a result of the investigation, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Oscar Ramirez, 39, of Meriden.

On May 31, Ramirez was taken into custody by the Meriden Police Department on the outstanding warrant.

He was charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault.

Ramirez was held on a court-set bond of $75,000 and transported to New Haven Superior Court for arraignment.

In a post to Facebook, the North Branford Police Department said it "remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting children and investigating allegations of abuse with the utmost professionalism, diligence, and compassion."

Crimes involving juveniles are among the most serious offenses investigated by law enforcement, and the department will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that victims are heard, supported, and afforded every available resource throughout the investigative and judicial process, police said.

"The successful resolution of this case is a testament to the importance of collaboration between law enforcement, prosecutors, child protection professionals, forensic interview specialists, and victim advocacy resources," NBPD Chief James Lovelace said, commending the efforts of Detective Piroli.

"Protecting children requires a coordinated community response, and we are grateful for the dedication and expertise demonstrated by all those involved," Lovelace said. He also offered thanks to the Meriden Police Department, the New Haven State's Attorney's Office, the Connecticut Department of Children and Families, and the Yale Child Study Center "for their assistance and partnership throughout this investigation."
