North Branford Rotary Club Leads As CT Rotary Clubs Join Together to Fight Illiteracy in Kenya

NORTH BRANFORD, CT — A remote Maasai Conservancy in the Central Highlands of Kenya recently benefitted from two Rotary grants, which were used to establish eight satellite libraries in remote village schools, according to a news release frmo the North Branford Rotay Club.

Literacy is the key to a better life, and Rotary is doing its part to help reduce literacy and instill a love of reading in this remote, isolated part of Kenya where test scores are low and it is a struggle to keep children in school.

These initiatives were made possible through a partnership with The Rotary Foundation, District 7980 and donations from local Rotary clubs.

Over 4,500 children will benefit directly as well as adults in the communities.

The eight library spaces are welcoming, clean, light, and secure. These satellite libraries are overseen by the main library hub called the Il Ngwesi Community Resource Center located in Chumvi, Kenya.

This facility was built by Kenyan Health Care Initiatives, a 501(c)3 Connecticut non-profit, and furnished with equipment, books, computers, shelving, and a playground.

Participating Rotaries for the main library and satellite facilities projects include the North Branford Rotary Club as the lead organization, Nanyuki, Kenya as host club, Branford, Bridgeport, Derby-Shelton, East Hampton/Marlborough, East Haven, Guilford, Hamden, Madison, Milford, New Haven, Norwich, Old Saybrook, Orange, Ridgefield, Stonington, Trumbull, West Haven, Westport, Westport-Sunrise, and Wilton.
