Dreaming

Lately, my imagination has gone wild about homesteading.

I like to imagine things that make me happy when I lay my head down on my pillow. It helps me to relax and drift off to sleep. I remember thinking about the prom, my wedding and future children throughout different times in my life. Sometimes I think about swimming in the pool or the ocean, floating on the warm water along with the waves and diving under.  Sometimes I think about spending time in my garden, sunflowers blooming, the smell of tomatoes, bumblebees buzzing by. But lately, my imagination has gone wild about homesteading.

Hanging laundry on the line: great big sheets and colorful quilts blowing in the breeze alongside Joshua’s gdiapers and tiny socks. A clothespin apron around my waist, Joshua along for a ride in his wagon.

Collecting eggs from our hen house. Shades of blue, green and brown. My favorite colors in a wire basket.

Pulling jars of tomatoes, strawberry jelly, peaches and applesauce out of the hot water bath and listening: plink! plink! plink!

Stirring milk to make homemade ricotta. Kneading bread by hand. The cinnamony smell of apple crisp baking in the oven.

Planting seeds with Joshua: cherry tomatoes, giant pumpkins, watermelons and carrots.  Picking raspberries until our fingers and lips are stained ruby.

Pies with lattice crusts cooling on the windowsill.

Knitting hats for my boys.

Wearing my favorite cotton skirt with bare feet.

Watching Ed stack wood for the wood stove. Homemade chicken soup bubbling away.

Filling baskets with crisp, tart apples from our own trees. Pumpkins and gourds of every color.

Sitting by the fire with Ed and Joshua on a cold, snowy evening. Snuggling together as a family, telling stories, sipping hot cider.

What do you daydream about?
