Freedom Fighters Don't Need to Fight for Charity

North Branford joins the fight, no matter what the weather.

The mix of rain and sleet splashed down onto the slush. It had snowed just about three days before that chilly afternoon that would seem to inspire anything but feelings of warmth and charity. Yet that’s exactly what we Freedom Fighters found on the doorsteps of North Branford residents. Every house we visited that first day of door-to-door trips donated some money to help veterans and some were more than generous.

We hear the stories every day in the news about the terrible things people do to each other: the robberies, assaults, crimes against neighbors, and you’d think people would be hesitant even to open the door for strangers anymore, never mind give them money. But our town’s sense of community seems to be stronger than all the doubts and hostilities we hear about in the papers and police blotters.  When we explained our cause, the Fisher House, no one could say no.

Our team is called the not only because it’s an incredibly awesome name, but because it really does ring true. When we to the Fisher House, we are contributing to the fight for freedom, not the freedom our soldiers are fighting to protect overseas, but the freedom they themselves are entitled to when they get home.

In letting families stay for free at their locations when veterans are seeking medical treatment, the Fisher House makes it easier for vets to recover from the perils of war and settle in with their families into civilian life.  It is the freedom of having comfortable recoveries from injuries and being able to have loved ones close that the Fisher House Foundation protects.

And North Branford residents seem to want to join the fight as well. So we’ll continue to rely on the neighborly charity of our fellow NB residents and the persuasive power of a noble cause and simply being nice.

In the coming weeks we’ll add to what we already have from our door to door campaigns and the donations from businesses and sports teams we’ve been able to count on. To give big is the least we can do for the people who give so much to our community and country.
