I was browsing the headlines last week when I came across a story about a woman that was carjacked on her first date with a guy. It was her date that carjacked her, talk about a dating disaster! It got me thinking about the first date Kevin invited me on. We dined on a delicious dinner of fish and chips, still in the newspaper, in the apartment he shared with three fellow students. In his defense had had taken the time to make me a beautiful hand inscribed invitation, and he did pay for dinner. We have been together 24 years so it must have worked.
Some of my friends were not so lucky. They were kind enough to let me share their dating disasters with you, on the condition that I didn’t use their names!
Beth had a large group of friends and some of them kept telling her that one of the guys wanted to ask her out but was nervous. Eventually he plucked up the courage and invited her to the movies and out for drinks afterwards. When they got to the bar he proceeded to tell her the he couldn’t see her anymore because he wanted to go out with a co-worker instead. As he finished telling her that, a woman walked over towards them….she was the co-worker. He had called her to pinch hit the date. He made introductions then asked date number two to wait for him at the bar as he had to give Beth a ride home!
Lisa was set up on a blind date, he took her to see a movie at the drive-in and realized he perhaps had not gotten over his last relationship when spent the entire date talking about his ex-girlfriend and the baby they had. Joanne also went out on a blind date, but her date was keen on seeing her again, even though she had told him she didn’t think it would work out. He called her repeatedly and when she stopped answering her calls, he turned up at her work telling everyone he was her boyfriend. Joanne’s sister had arranged the date so she came to the rescue by ratting him out to his mom. The phone calls and impromptu visits stopped. I saved the best for last.
My friend Laurie was in her 20’s and on a night out with friends she hit it off with a guy called Mike. He asked if he could take her out the following night so she agreed so long as they could make it a double date with her friends. The next night when her date arrived to pick her up, her little brother answered the door and promptly started laughing hysterically. Laurie rushed downstairs to see what was so funny to find her date wearing a black and white striped zoot suit and black suede platform boots….. Laurie was a little confused; he was dressed normally the night before. She asked Mike about his unusual get up and he explained he didn’t have time to do laundry.
Mike drove over to pick up her friends for the double date and they reacted the same way as her brother. By now Laurie was embarrassed so she suggested the go to a bar on the other side of town hoping no-one would know them. Mike insisted on paying for the first round of drinks and pulled a huge wad of cash from his pocket, before they had finished he said he had to out to his car for something. After half an hour he had not come back so Laurie figured he had been mad at them all laughing at his outfit and left. As they were putting on coats to leave, Mike walked back in, soaking wet. He said he had been run over by a car in the parking lot and had ended up in the snow and slush. Laurie asked why he went out anyway and he told her he went to get money from the car…..but he had already shown them he had plenty of cash paying for the first round.
At this point even Mike knew the date was not going well so he wanted to go home, but first he wanted to go by the bar they had met at the night before to prove to his friends that Laurie had actually agreed to go out with him. As she was feeling sorry for him she agreed to one drink, then he asked if she wanted to go on a moonlight stroll along the shores of Lake Michigan. Laurie was quick to turn it down; after all it was January and freezing cold! Admitting defeat he finally took her home and attempted a goodnight kiss….which Laurie turned down. She asked him not to call her; she didn’t think it would work out!
So have you had a funny experience dating? None of the guys I know were willing to share their bad date stories but I know there are some out there, come on guys, spill the beans!
