Northford Man Found With 40 Bags Of Heroin After Crash: Police

Police say the man was operating under the influence when he crashed his vehicle in Wallingford on Tuesday morning.

WALLINGFORD, CT — A Northford man faces several charges after police say he was found to be in the possession of more than 40 bags of heroin and other drug paraphernalia after crashing his vehicle Tuesday morning in Wallingford. Police also said the man, 30-year-old Christian Ancrath, was operating under the influence at the time of the crash.

Police responded to a report of a one-vehicle crash on Northford Road shortly after 9 a.m. on Jan. 30. During the ensuing investigation, the responding officer noticed that the vehicle operator, Ancrath, was acting suspicious and wasn’t following commands and “seemed to be concealing something under his arm inside his coat,” according to Lt. Anthony DeMaio.

DeMaio said the officer was concerned for his safety and searched Ancrath. DeMaio said Ancrath was found to be in the possession of a small black-colored zipper bag that contained 41 wax bags of heroin labeled “back off” with a Tasmanian Devil character, two mini-zip lock baggies of cocaine, several empty wax and mini-zip lock baggies, along with a rubber tourniquet, spoon with residue, three used syringes, six packages of new syringes, a Q-tip, a Bic-lighter and alcohol swabs.

As the investigation continued, the officer noticed that Ancrath was exhibiting signs that he may be under the influence of drugs. DeMaio said that observation, along with the fact he had crashed his vehicle and was concealing heroin and cocaine, the officer put Ancrath through a series of roadside field sobriety tests, which he failed.

Ancrath was arrested and charged with two counts of illegal possession of narcotics and one count each of operating under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released after posting a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Feb. 13.
