Obituary: ​Hans Tjardes, 79, of North Branford

Hans Tjardes of North Branford, 11/29/1938 - 04/07/2018, died peacefully surrounded by his family in Branford 4/7/18. Hans was born in Jever, Germany, November 29, 1938. Son of the late Hans & Grete Tjardes ( Schonbohm).

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Maria Tjardes (Ciarlo) and three children; Anne Johnson (husband Mark) and children Marzia and Caroline, of Branford Marta Elmasry and children, Lauren and Katherine of Branford , Albert Tjardes (wife Jessica) and daughter Erin, of East Lyme as well as his sisters Marta Frerichs and Irmgard Oltmanns (both of Jever, Germany). Hans arrived in USA on a one-way ticket with $40 and the American dream.

He met his future wife while learning English together. He enjoyed spending time with his family at Linsley Lake, and playing Bocce at Branford Point. He touched so many lives with his smile, laughter, and kind nature. He always had an appreciation of all people and cultures. With his wife and family he loved to travel the world. Hans was a member of Tabor Lutheran Church and was employed by Stop & Shop for over four decades.Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St. Branford. Burial will be private. Friends may call prior to the service from 10:00-11:00.
