The North Haven Memorial Library sponsored a plant swap with collaboration from the Daytime Gardeners of North Haven and the North Haven Garden Club on Saturday, January 20, 2024. Garden club members brought cuttings and plants to share with those who attended and many guests brought cuttings from their own house plants. Information was shared and questions were answered by the garden club members. This event provided the opportunity to see different types of plants and get ideas about what plants might do well in certain indoor environments. It is also a nice way to get new plants without the expense of purchasing. A bonus is watching the roots start growing and ultimately creating your own plant for your home. Families attended and the children were very interested in seeing how the roots began to grow from a cutting of the mother plant. A good winter project is growing a celery plant by cutting off the root end, leaving about 2 inches above the roots. Insert three toothpicks into the root end and suspend it in a cup of water. Keep the end submerged and watch new roots grow. Soon you may see a new celery stalk start growing at the top end!
