NORTH HAVEN, CT — A Florida man is accused of trying to fraudulently withdraw more than $515,000 from a North Haven resident’s bank account on back-to-back days last June, according to police.

Police said it was reported that a man entered the bank on June 11 and presented fraudulent identification containing a North Haven resident’s personal identifying information in an attempt to withdraw more than $515,000 from the resident’s bank accounts.

“Fortunately, after the resident received notification of the attempted transaction, the check issued to the unidentified individual was stopped before any funds were released,” police wrote in a news release.

On June 12, police said the same man returned to the bank, again “presenting the fraudulent identification and attempting another transaction.”

“During this incident, a second check in excess of $515,000 was issued,” police wrote. “The victim was once again able to have the transaction stopped, and no monetary loss was sustained.

“North Haven Detectives conducted an extensive investigation, including the execution of multiple search warrants and the review of surveillance footage and financial records related to the incidents.”

Police said through continued investigative efforts, and in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and several out-of-state law enforcement agencies, North Haven detectives identified the suspect as 54-year-old Florida resident Marcos Mokas.

North Haven detectives obtained a nationwide extraditable arrest warrant for Mokas, who was located in Florida, according to police.

Mokas was taken into custody on Feb. 22 by the Fort Pierce Police Department and held on the North Haven warrant for his arrest, police said.

North Haven detectives traveled to Florida on May 8 and took Mokas into custody and brought him back to the North Haven Police Department, according to police.

Mokas was charged with two counts each of criminal attempt to commit first-degree larceny, first-degree identity theft, criminal impersonation, and first-degree forgery.

He was scheduled to appear at Meriden Superior Court on Friday morning.

“The North Haven Police Department remains committed to relentlessly pursuing individuals who commit crimes within our community,” police wrote. “No matter where offenders attempt to hide—whether in another town, state, or across the country—we will utilize every available investigative resource and work alongside our law enforcement partners to identify, locate, and hold them accountable.”
