NORTH HAVEN, CT — The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has extended the deadline for public comments regarding Amazon's plan to bring its drone-delivery service to its North Haven facility.
DEEP will accept public comments on the proposal until Oct. 15, according to its website. Public comments can be emailed to DEEP.FCC.PublicComments@ct.gov.
Amazon is seeking federal approval for its Prime Air delivery service in North Haven.
Amazon plans to fly up to 1,000 drone deliveries a day out of its North Haven warehouse to addresses within 7.5 miles of its facility (covering North Haven, Hamden, Wallingford, and New Haven).
In an update posted to Facebook on Sunday, North Haven First Selectman Michael Freda said he had a "very good discussion with an Amazon representative representing Amazon Corporate, not Amazon North Haven."
"The drone initiative is now on hold," Freda wrote in the post. "Amazon has agreed that there will be no decision made until the general public, until our State General Assembly, and until my Regional Mayor's Council all have a chance to be heard, to ask questions and have all questions answered during a series of upcoming meetings.
"Amazon will be conducting all of those meetings.
"This is good news right now."
North Haven state Rep. David Yaccarino and state Sen. Paul Cicarella recently co-signed a letter from state Rep. Vincent Candelora, who represents Durham, East Haven, Guilford, and North Branford, to Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner Emma Cimino expressing their "sincere concern regarding Amazon's proposed electric drone package delivery operations ("Prime Air") based in North Haven."
Hamden Mayor Adam Sendroff also sent a letter last week to the state DEEP to "request a pause on the FAA's consistency determination until sufficient time and information are provided to fully evaluate the project's potential impacts."
