Backpack Containing $35K In Cash Stolen In North Haven: Police

A 17-year-old is in custody in connection with the theft of a backpack that contained about $35,000 in cash, according to police.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — A 17-year-old is in custody in connection with the theft of a backpack that contained about $35,000 in cash Tuesday afternoon in North Haven, according to police.

Police responded around 3 p.m. on Jan. 23 to two separate calls of theft on Universal Drive in North Haven.

One involved a theft of a purse that police said was mistakenly left unattended in a shopping cart briefly, and the other was a theft of the backpack containing $35,000 in cash.

Police said the investigation led to the identification of a suspect vehicle, which was shared with neighboring police departments.

The vehicle was found in New Haven and a 17-year-old suspect was arrested, according to police.

The suspect was in possession of $21,000 cash at the time of arrest, police said.

The juvenile was charged with first-degree larceny and sixth-degree larceny for the crimes that were committed in North Haven, according to police.

“An Order to Detain was secured by the New Haven Police Department for crimes stemming in their city (stolen vehicle) and the juvenile was transported to a holding facility,” North Haven police wrote in a post on Facebook. “North Haven detectives served search warrants on a residence and the suspect vehicle, and have recovered evidence linking the suspect to both thefts that afternoon.”

More arrests are expected, according to police.
