Botany Students Awarded Creativity Grant at North Haven High School

The North Haven Education Foundation, Inc. (NHEF) recently received word from Valarie Fortney, a biology teacher in the community who had received funding for a Creativity Grant from the foundation in the fall that two of her students in her independent botany study have designed an irrigation system for the high school’s greenhouse with her assistance.

According to the educator, the students, John Gildart and Corrine Myjak, designed an irrigation system which “will allow for long term cultivation of mature plants to serve as specimens for student study and to allow for the irrigation of the students’ plants to survive during periods of extended absence.”

The science instructor stated that the project “required a tremendous amount of research on irrigation best practices and analysis of the greenhouse structure and facility requirements.” Approved by the foundation’s board of directors in early December, the entire request for the $305 Creativity Grant was provided for the venture. In conclusion Fortney added, “The results of their hard work, problem solving, and the generosity of the NHEF will benefit NHHS students for many years to come!”
