
The Turtle was America's first submarine, created by David Bushnell, a graduate of Yale University, with a documented record of use in combat against an enemy vessel, on September 6, 1776 in New York City Harbor. It was piloted by Sergeant Ezra Lee from Lyme, Connecticut.
