Candice Travis appointed faculty director of the Albert Schweitzer Institute at Quinnipiac University

Candice Travis, assistant teaching of political science, has been appointed faculty director of the Albert Schweitzer Institute at Quinnipiac University, which is dedicated to advancing education, civic engagement, public service and dialogue in the spirit of humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Albert Schweitzer.

As faculty director, Travis will help shape the institute’s next chapter, expanding opportunities for students and faculty to connect academic learning with civic engagement, public service, interdisciplinary collaboration and community partnerships.

Travis brings a strong commitment to civic engagement, community partnership and student learning, along with an academic background that aligns closely with the institute’s mission.

“I care deeply about working in spaces where students can become empowered leaders, translating thought into action and making positive changes in their communities,” she said. “I am honored to build upon the legacy of the Schweitzer Institute and help foster the next generation of engaged citizens here at Quinnipiac.”

A political theorist, Travis earned her bachelor’s degree in philosophy and her master’s degree in political science from Lehigh University, and her PhD in political science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. While at UMass Amherst, she worked in the Office of Civic Engagement and Service-Learning, directing student outreach and administering a certificate program in Community Engagement and Public Service.

Her scholarship brings together philosophy, politics and history to examine how power shapes the lives and actions of ordinary citizens. Her research focuses on conspiracy theory, white supremacy, white nationalism and political movements in contemporary American politics, with particular attention to expanding democratic inclusion.

Since joining Quinnipiac, Travis has been active in the campus community. She serves on the Voter Education Committee, where she has helped lead voter engagement efforts and connect courses with voter education programming. She also has supported students through the Office of Belonging and worked to increase mental health awareness through the Men’s Initiative Committee. In April 2024, Travis received the Student Government Association’s Outstanding Faculty Award.
