CIAC Hockey Championships Dedicated In Memory Of Former North Haven Coach
The CIAC boys hockey state championships are being dedicated in memory of Mike "Vio" Violano, who won a state title with North Haven.
WEST HAVEN, CT — The 2026 CIAC boys hockey state championships are being dedicated in memory of longtime coach and West Haven icon Mike Violano, the CIAC announced Wednesday.
“A true friend of hockey, a beloved coach, and a business owner for 40 years (Vio's Sports Plus in West Haven) ‘Vio’ passed away in October of 2024 and is deeply missed,” the CIAC wrote in a post on Facebook. “His life and contributions to high school hockey will be formally celebrated during the Div. II State Championship game on Friday March 20 at Quinnipiac University.”
Violano, a West Haven High School and University of New Haven graduate, won four state championships at Notre Dame-West Haven and another title at North Haven High School in 2003.

Violano was also a standout athlete at West Haven High, starring in soccer, hockey and baseball. He was inducted into the West Haven Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.
