Coyotes Spotted In North Haven

A resident reports two coyotes were seen running through backyards in North Haven on Tuesday morning.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — A Patch reader reports that two coyotes were seen running through backyards on Middletown Avenue and Great Meadow Drive in North Haven at 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

Coyotes have become more common in Connecticut in recent years. The risk of a coyote attacking a person is low, but they are known to attack and kill pets, including cats and dogs less than 25 pounds, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Coyotes can be frightened away by making loud noises and acting aggressively. DEEP advises people to not keep food outside as it could attract coyotes and make them more accustomed to people. They are typically more active at night, but can become active during daylight hours.

Cats should be kept indoors and small dogs should be kept on a leash and under close supervision while outside. Coyote-proof fencing may be the only method to fully eliminate coyotes from a property.
