The Daytime Gardeners of North Haven visited Lavender Pond Farm recently for their August meeting and were escorted by the owner, Denise Salafia, on a tour of the grounds. Some lavender plants were displayed in an actual bed in front of the barn/retail store beside which some club members inspect the still, imported from Europe, used to extract the oil.
In 2014, Denise, her husband and two sons moved into the 25-acre property, designated farm land, comprised of two ponds, several large out buildings, the owner's spacious home and a separate cottage. The idea was to take a sizeable portion and beautify it with acres of lavender. Seven thousand plants of French and English lavender were sown and thrived and are constantly augmented and rearranged presently. The extracted oil is used to impart fragrance to soaps, sachets, candles, lotions, insect repellent, etc. - all for sale on the property in Killingworth.
The Daytime Gardeners of North Haven are members of the Federated Garden Clubs of CT, Inc. and National Garden Clubs, Inc.
