Daytime Gardeners of North Haven

Offer Presentation on Stinkology - The fragrances of Field and Forest

The Daytime Gardeners of North Haven will meet on Tuesday, April 25 at the North Haven Recreation Center, 7 Linsley Street at 11:00a.m. This month’s program will be STINKOLOGY- Fragrances of Field and Forest by Peter and Barbara Rzasa

Stems, leaves, roots, bark and fruit of many plants produce a variety of fragrances ranging from the sweet smells of spice bush and sweet birch to that of bitter chokecherry and putrid skunk cabbage. These fragrances result from chemicals produced by plants as a defense against insect and animal predators and to protect against fungal and bacterial attack. Participants will learn how humans have used these fragrant substances for food flavoring and preservation for manufacture of perfumes for medicinal purposes. Several plant and tree specimens will be available for smelling.

This meeting is open to the public for a $5.00 guest donation at the door. New members are always welcome. For more information, call Brenda Howlett at (203) 239-1557. The Daytime Gardeners of North Haven is a member of the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut and National Garden Clubs, Inc.
