‘Disturbing, Racist’ Flyers Found In North Haven: Police

Police are investigating to determine if the incident "rises to the level of a criminal matter," according to officials.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — Police are investigating after “disturbing, racist literature” was found in North Haven, according to officials.

Officials said police have been notified that the flyers were left on the ground in a neighborhood in North Haven. Police didn’t identify the neighborhood where the flyers were found.

“North Haven has zero tolerance for hate speech against any person or group, whether it is based on race, creed, religion, sexual orientation, country of origin, gender identity or any other affiliation, and we condemn this behavior,” police wrote in a post on Facebook. “We have contacted our public works department to clean up and remove the flyers, and have notified the Connecticut State Police Hate Crimes Investigative Unit, advising them of the occurrence.

“Our officers have spoken with complainants, and detectives have been assigned to follow up and determine if this incident rises to the level of a criminal matter. Lastly, we have requested members of that neighborhood share with us any potential surveillance footage they may have of individuals distributing these flyers.

“While we find this literature disturbing and morally offensive, we also must be cognizant of Constitutional rights. Offensive thoughts or language alone, typically are protected by the 1st Amendment. These flyers do not appear to call for, or incite, violence. If we determine crime(s) have been committed, we will seek to arrest those responsible.”
