Rotary Club Presents Play on Town Green

On June 4th, the North Haven Rotary Club will present an original play on the Town Green in honor of the Town’s 225th Anniversary. The play is loosely based on Wilder’s “Our Town,” but in this case, the focus is on North Haven, primarily through the utilization of written statements from school children about their hometown. The performance, entitled “Free to be, North Haven and Me” which is being produced and directed by Jared Brown of Jared Andrew Studio, will include comments, thoughts and feelings of the children, as well as some older citizens about their Town. Some of these same children will perform in the play, and others will be encouraged to participate as extras. Furthermore, several prominent citizens have agreed to make cameo appearances.

Since it is the town’s anniversary, Rotary is working closely with First Selectman Michael Freda, as well as several other town employees who have offered to volunteer their services. A percentage of the profits from Giulio’s Pizza who plans to offer fried dough treats and Joe’s Ice Cream will help with expenses, while the club will sell hotdogs, hamburgers, pulled pork, beverages, and homemade desserts. Cotton candy will also be available.

Similar to the summer concert series, townspeople are requested to bring their own lawn seating, and a modest $5.00 per ticket will be collected for admission to the play. In addition to all of the volunteer help, some of the local businesses have offered to financially sponsor the activities and will be promoted on location, as well as in a post media release. A 50/50 raffle ($1) will also be available.

The excitement will begin at 1:00 pm, and the one hour play will open at 3:00. If volunteers can be found, a variety of musical performances may be provided throughout the day by children, as well as the possibility of entertainment by area disc jockeys. Closing the day’s activities at approximately 6:00 p.m., the club hopes the event will raise funds to assist the Town in becoming recognized by the State of Connecticut as a HeartSafe Community, a designation made when a town has an adequate number of life-saving Automatic External Defibrillators.
