Man, 19, Charged In Check Fraud Case In North Haven: Police

Police said the man was arrested following a thorough investigation.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — A 19-year-old New Haven resident was recently arrested in connection with a check fraud case in North Haven, according to police.

North Haven police responded on Sept. 16 to the area of Moulthrop Street in response on the report of check fraud.

Police said officers met with the victim, who reported several checks had been deposited at a local post office and that they subsequently received notification that one of the checks had been altered.

The victim also said that the altered check was attempted to be deposited in the New Haven area, according to police.

Police said Deren James Newton, 19, of New Haven, was identified as a suspect following a thorough investigation.

Newton was arrested Feb. 7 on a warrant and charged with second-degree forgery and third-degree larceny.

“The North Haven Police Department remains committed to investigating financial crimes and protecting residents from fraud,” police wrote.
