Max Sinoway Baseball League

Youth Baseball Should Give Every Child a Fair Chance

Youth baseball should help children develop skills, build confidence, and discover a love of the game. When a league’s decisions consistently favor certain teams, those goals suffer.

As a parent, I have serious concerns about how our local league forms its teams and responds to families. Parents are told that tryouts will be followed by a draft, yet I have seen no evidence that the promised draft takes place. Instead, certain coaches appear to receive a concentration of experienced players, while beginners are distributed among other teams.

I have witnessed parents and coaches raise concerns with the president and board, only to receive responses that I found dismissive, patronizing, or inconsistent with what we have observed. The president’s lack of availability to parents makes meaningful discussion and accountability even harder.

The consequences reach beyond the scoreboard. Repeated, overwhelming losses can leave children discouraged, embarrassed, and questioning whether they belong in the sport. Beginners need patient coaching and opportunities to improve. Balanced teams can support that development while still challenging experienced players.

No league can guarantee equal results. But it can provide a transparent process, fair opportunities, and leadership willing to listen. When the same teams consistently dominate, families deserve a clear explanation of how rosters are selected.

The president and board should publish their team-selection procedures, follow the process they promise, and hold an open meeting where parents and coaches can raise concerns and receive direct answers.

Every child’s experience matters. The league’s success should be measured by how well it serves all its players—not simply by the victories of its strongest teams.
