Moose Spotted in North Haven

The state DEEP is advising motorists in the North Haven area to use extra caution and be observant while driving due to the sighting of a moose near Interstate 91. The moose was last seen this morning on Old Clintonville Road trying to cross Route 22.

Moose near roadways pose a particular danger because once struck, they are more likely to collapse through a vehicle windshield due to their tall stance, according to the DEEP. They are also difficult to see when driving at night because of their dark color.

All moose and deer vehicle collisions should be reported to local or state authorities, or DEEP Environmental Conservation Police Officers (860-424-3333). Additionally, residents throughout the state are encouraged to report moose sightings on the DEEP Web site at http://www.ct.gov/deep/wildlife.

Connecticut has a resident moose population estimated at 100 to 150 animals. They are found most often in the northeastern and northwestern wooded corners of Connecticut but have been seen in most other parts of the state.
