North Haven Baseball Heads Back to State Final

The senior-laden Indians accomplished their goal of bringing legendary coach Bob DeMayo back to the state final. Now they need one more win.

The North Haven baseball team and legendary coach Bob DeMayo are heading back to the state championship game.

The team’s seven seniors set out to get the Indians, and DeMayo, to the program’s first title game since 2004 and they accomplished that goal with a 7-2 win over No. 7 Windsor in the Class L semifinal Wednesday at Palmer Field in Middletown.

“That was our goal at the beginning of the year to at least get him there,” senior center fielder Richie DePalma, who drove in three runs, told Jim Fuller of the New Haven Register / GameTimeCT.

The 22nd-seeded Indians (19-6) will play No. 13 East Lyme in the final Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Palmer Field.

DeMayo, who is in his 57th season as coach, told Fuller he toyed with retirement because “I had a pretty serious knee operation that laid me up for a long time. I am not trying to be a poster boy for senior coaches, but I am doing what I love to do.”
