SATURDAY CONCERT – Jazz 1, Saturday, October 1 at 2:00-3:00pm

North Haven High School's "Jazz 1" treats audiences to a blended palette of musical genres, including Jazz Standards, Great American Songbook, Latin and Rock-Fusion. This award winning ensemble has merited superior ratings, outstanding soloist and section recognitions. Sponsored by the Friends of the North Haven Library.

WHO WAS MARTHA CULVER?, Monday, October 3 at 7 – 8pm

Martha Louisa Culver Smith was a woman not unlike many living in North Haven in the latter part of the 19th, early part of the 20th century. Was she ahead of her times? Who was this person who gifted her home to the Town of North Haven upon her death in 1925? Julie Hulten, volunteer archivist for the North Haven Historical Society and Museums, has scoured old local newspapers, poured over interviews with folks who knew her, engaged in some genealogical research, and contacted or linked to places associated with Martha's varied personal and professional experiences. Join us to learn more about this fascinating, problematic, and perplexing woman whose home is now the focus of renovation and renewal by the Town and the Historical Society. KATHARINE HEPBURN – From Hartford to Hollywood, Wednesday, October 5 at 7-8 pm

With a stage and film career that spanned six decades, Katharine Hepburn is an American icon. Born and raised in Connecticut, Hepburn had a career in stage, film and television that reflected the changing role of women in broader society. Challenging the norms of the day, she took control of her image and identity by establishing a unique sense of style which influenced countless women, fashion designers, and the informal, elegant approach to American style that continues to resonate today. Presented by the Connecticut Historical Society. Registration recommended.

SATURDAY MATINEE, Saturday, October 8 at 2 pm, Movie: "Me Before You"

Young and quirky Louisa "Lou" Clark (Emilia Clarke) moves from one job to the next to help her family make ends meet. Her cheerful attitude is put to the test when she becomes a caregiver for Will Traynor (Sam Claflin), a wealthy young banker left paralyzed from an accident two years earlier. Will's cynical outlook starts to change when Louisa shows him that life is worth living. As their bond deepens, their lives and hearts change in ways neither one could have imagined. HEARING SCREENINGS, Friday, October 14 at 10:15 am-12:00 pm

37 million people in the United States have a hearing loss, making it the third most common health-related condition. Studies show how an untreated hearing loss can have a negative impact on our quality of life and personal relationships. Dr. Hillary Lewis from Masonicare Hearing Center will provide hearing screenings by appointment. Hearing screenings are quick, simple, and can indicate if a more complete test is necessary. PAINT NIGHT, Monday, October 17 at 6:30 – 7:30 pm, Ages 18 – up

You’ve been asking, and it’s finally here: join us for a Paint Night for adults! No painting experience is necessary to participate. Just wear comfy old clothes and prepare to relax and follow along as we create a fall scene together. All supplies are provided and you will leave with a unique work of art. An example of the painting will be available in the Adult Dept. starting Oct. 1. Registration required.

A PASSEGGIATA (Stroll) THROUGH ITALY: Past, Present, and Future, Wednesday, October 19 at 7 – 8 pm

“Walk” through the richness and diversity of historical and modern events of Italy. Lively, humorous and engaging, this program features personal anecdotes from a seasoned tour director. Visit this beautiful country as an armchair traveler! Presented by Mariann Millard. Registration recommended.

SAT PRACTICE, Saturday, October 22 at 10:30 am - 2:45 pm

Did you know that the SAT changed in March 2016? Curious how you might perform on the new SAT? Register for a FREE full-length practice test administered under simulated conditions! Every student who attends will receive a personalized score report and score consultation for the new SAT. Presented by the Princeton Review. This practice test is free and open to all students. Enrollment is limited, and registration is required.

Students should bring sharpened pencils, a calculator, and some water/snacks.

WITCHES IN CONNECTICUT, Monday, October 24 at 7– 8 pm

The harrowing story of the hanging of witches in Colonial New England continues to haunt our present-day imagination. The trials and executions of witches in Connecticut predated the more famous Salem witch panic by over 40 years. Hear the stories of some of the women and men accused, tried, and executed as witches and learn how Connecticut successfully controlled the spread of witch accusations long before Salem erupted in panic and violence. Presented by the Connecticut Historical Society. Registration recommended.

MARK TWAIN, Wednesday, October 26 at 7 – 8 pm

"Of all the beautiful towns it has been my fortune to see," Samuel Clemens said on his first visit in 1868, "Hartford is the chief." Throughout his two decades of residence in the city he enjoyed a joyful family life, produced his best-read books, pursued vigorous social activities--and poked fun at local icons such as the insurance industry and the Charter Oak. Steve Courtney presents this fascinating talk on Mark Twain’s life in Hartford, CT. Registration recommended.
