North Haven Man Robbed at Gunpoint in New Haven

The victim told police he was robbed while shooting dice in a game on Sunday.

A North Haven man was robbed at gunpoint while shooting dice in New Haven on Sunday afternoon.

Officer Chad Curry was patrolling the James Street area around 5:47 p.m. on Aug. 16 when he was waved down by the 41-year-old victim, according to New Haven Police Spokesman Officer David Hartman.

The victim told police he was shooting dice when he was confronted by a Hispanic man holding a brown and black sawed-off double barreled shotgun. He said the perpetrator stole $400 in cash from him and another $200 from a 54-year-old man from New Haven.

The victims said the robber made off in a red Volkswagen Beetle. Witnesses corroborated the victim’s story and provided descriptions of the gunman and his cohort who got out of the car – perhaps as a lookout, according to Hartman.

New Haven Police are looking for a Hispanic man with a pony-tail who wore a baseball cap and baggy brown shorts. Officers who reviewed surveillance footage of the robbery believe the perpetrators had been casing the dice game for some time.

Their approach seemed carefully thought out, according to Hartman. No one was hurt.
