Obituary: Angelo Raccio, 99, Of North Haven

NORTH HAVEN, CT — (From North Haven Funeral Home): Angelo Raccio, 99, of North Haven, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 27, 2023, at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the beloved husband of 70 years to the late Anne Brasile Raccio.

Angelo served his country faithfully in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a crew member on both the USS Savanah from 1942 and 1943 and the USS Vicksburg from 1943 to 1946 until he was discharged. Angelo proudly continued to attend all the reunions for the USS Vicksburg throughout the country. He often shared the story how the USS Savanah was severely damaged in the invasion of Italy when the ship was hit with a radio-controlled bomb and still stayed afloat.

After his time in the military Angelo worked as a crane operating engineer for Local 478 and later for Metro North as a Conrail crane operator until his retirement.

During his time as a crane operator, he worked on the former Quinnipiac River Bridge (Q Bridge) and two Millstone Nuclear Power Plants. He was a member of the American Legion Post 76 in North Haven and the US Naval Sailor Cruiser Association.

Angelo enjoyed working in his yard, especially in his enormous garden, playing cards especially Floater and most of all his many trips to the casino.

Beloved father of Diane Forth Raccio (David Tanguay), Stephen A. Raccio (Elaine), and Barbara Kovacs (Gregory). Loving grandfather of Meagan (Gareth), Michael (Ani), Stephen (Rachel), Amanda, Daniel (Charleen), Lindsay (Evan), Justin (Erin), Keristen (Shawn), Kristen, and Peter. Brother of Nicholas Raccio, Joanne Broga, and the late Sylvia Borelli, Mary Martine, and Alfred Raccio. Also survived by five great-grandchildren, many nieces, and nephews.

The visiting hours will be on Friday, March 31 from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Havens Family, North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue. Family and friends are invited to go directly to St. Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish at St. Therese Church, 555 Middletown Avenue, North Haven on Saturday morning, April 1st at 10:00 to attend a Mass of Christian burial and are also invited to attend the committal service with full military honors immediately following in All Saints Cemetery.
