Officer Helped Save Suicidal Man In North Haven: Police

Police say the officer helped defuse a tense situation involving an intoxicated man who threatened to kill himself.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — A North Haven police officer is being credited with helping to defuse a situation involving an intoxicated man who threatened to kill himself, according to officials.

Police responded to a North Haven home on Feb. 6 on the report of a suicidal man who was in the possession of a knife. A family member told police the man refused to put the knife down and was intoxicated.

“Officers located the man in his bedroom holding the knife, threatening suicide, and refusing to put the knife down,” police said. “After communicating with the man, officers were able to deescalate the situation and retrieve the knife safely. Officer John Battick should be commended for his communication skills and effort during a tense situation. Without his ability to deescalate the suicidal man, this incident could have resulted in serious injury, or worse.”
