Police Warn Of Phone Scam In North Haven

Police are warning residents of a recent, and ongoing scam, that often preys on the elderly.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — North Haven police are warning residents of an ongoing phone scam in which the caller is posing as a representative of United Illuminating.

“It’s come to our attention about a common, yet annoying scam call continuing,” police wrote in a post on Facebook. “Scammers call posing as a utility provider, in this case United Illuminating, claiming your bill is unpaid and your service will be shut off if it is not paid within the hour. You are then commonly asked to dial a provided number to rectify the issue, where scammers will try and obtain money or sensitive information from you. These scammers often prey on the elderly as well.

“Trust your instinct. If it seems unusual, it probably is. Hang up and report it to the FTC.”
