Quinnipiac Shuttle Switch Riles Hamden Officials

The university has switched its shuttle routes, taking students to North Haven businesses instead of Hamden stores, restaurants.

A shuttle switch has added another chapter to the strained relationship between the Town of Hamden and Quinnipiac University.

Kate Ramunni of the New Haven Register reports that beginning this semester, Quinnipiac University has switched its shuttle routes where it previously took students to Hamden businesses, including the Hamden Plaza, and replaced it with a route that takes students to Universal Drive in North Haven.

While Quinnipiac officials say the routes were changed because of the university’s growing presence in North Haven, including a nearly $300 million investment in the campus, and they believe most of its future growth will be in that town, Hamden officials view it as a slap in the face, according to Ramunni.

Hamden Mayor Curt Leng called it “just another petty gesture” and told Ramunni that “Quinnipiac may be investing in North Haven, but they are inconveniencing their students today, all of whom are housed in Hamden.”

“All the university is doing is inconveniencing the students, wasting a lot of gas and attempting to hurt the Hamden business community,” Leng said. “They are about as far from being a good neighbor as they could be, and frankly, it’s shameful.”
