NORTH HAVEN, CT — A 19-year-old New Haven resident has admitted assisting an armed robbery in North Haven last year, according to officials.

Robert Smith, also known as “Robbie,” pleaded guilty Thursday to federal charges in connection with the gunpoint robbery of a gas station in North Haven, U.S. Attorney for Connecticut Vanessa Roberts Avery announced.

According to court documents and statements made in court, ATF and New Haven Police Department investigators identified a person who is accused of committing a series of gunpoint robberies and a carjacking that occurred in late June and early July 2022.

The investigation found that Smith helped the person commit an armed robbery of a Shell Gas Station located at 195 State Street in North Haven on July 6, 2022, according to officials.

Smith pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and abetting Hobbs Act robbery, which carries a maximum term of 20 years in prison, and one count of aiding and abetting the carrying, using, and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, which carries a mandatory consecutive term of imprisonment of at least seven years.

Smith has been detained since Jan. 3, officials said.
