The NHHS 4x400 Relay and Macarelli Both Place 4th in Class L Championship Meet

Spencer logs a personal best time in the 55 meter hurdles.

The North Haven High boys indoor track and fields team placed 15th (out of 24 teams) with 9 points in Saturday’s CIAC Class L State Championship Meet at the New Haven Athletic Center.

Matt Macarelli placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 44-feet 4 ¼ inches. Steve Albert, Kevin Bucknall, Steve LaLuna, and Colby Jennings added a fourth place time of 3 minutes, 38.82 seconds in the 4x400 relay. John Spencer posted a fifth place/personal best 8.54 in the 55 hurdles. Bucknall also placed sixth in the 600 with a 1:27.

“Our 4x800 relay ran well but did not place,” Coach Marc Celmer said. “Carl Claver-Obinna did a great job with his 8.76 in the hurdles but didn’t place. All in all, I’m pleased with the boys results, especially of our underclassmen. Their results prove that our program is going in the right direction.”

He added, “Kevin Bucknall was not at his best as he was recovering from a cold. I knew when he came down with it earlier in the week, it would impact him and our team. It takes a while to recover from and takes something out of you when you get a cold.”

Macarelli, Bucknall and the NHHS 4x400 relay will now advance to the State Open, which takes place on Saturday at the New Haven Athletic Center
