7 Displaced After Blaze Breaks Out At Norwalk Apartment Building: FD

Police were forced to remove a resident from the building after they re-entered their apartment and would not come out, fire officials said.

NORWALK, CT — Seven residents were displaced by a blaze that broke out early Wednesday morning at a 10-unit apartment building in Norwalk, according to fire officials.

In a news release, Deputy Fire Chief Adam Markowitz said the structure fire was reported around 12:44 a.m. in a two-story wood frame apartment building on North Avenue.

Initial reports indicated smoke and flames could be seen coming from the building. As crews were arriving, police removed a resident who had initially exited the building, then re-entered their apartment and would not come out, Markowitz said.

Crews found heavy smoke coming from the first and second floors as they searched and ventilated the building. Additional crews were called in to help extinguish the fire, Markowitz said.

The fire was extinguished in 90 minutes by a crew of 33 people in total, Markowitz said. An additional mutual aid engine from Stamford was called to the scene for manpower, and the Stamford, New Canaan and Westport fire departments provided station coverage during the fire.

No injuries were reported, however seven residents were displaced as a result of the blaze, Markowitz said. The American Red Cross said Wednesday they are providing assistance to meet the residents' immediate needs.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Markowitz said.
