Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. hosts Financial Literacy Workshop in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service, the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Omicron Upsilon Omega Chapter in partnership with Connecticut Association for Human Services hosted a free community workshop at the Smilow Life Center (Open Door Center in Norwalk) entitled, Money Matters: How to Create and Maintain a Spending Plan. The purpose of the event was to show participants how to manage their money by preparing a personal spending plan and identifying ways to decrease spending and increase income. Those attending listed steps for setting financial goals. They prepared a spending plan to estimate monthly income and expenses. Children of the participants enjoyed activities and light refreshments.

This workshop was useful because participants learned how to improve credit and reduce debt. According to an analysis done by nerdwallet.com, American’s total credit card debt reached an estimated $908 billion in 2017, an 8 percent increase from the previous year. The study showed spending categories such as medical expenses are being put on credit cards, student loans, and high interest rates contributed to the increase.
