NORWALK, CT — A "possible hate incident" reported Tuesday at a Norwalk nail salon is currently under investigation, according to the Norwalk Police Department.
In a news release, Police Lt. Tomasz Podgorski said officers were called to Bling Bling Nail Salon on Main Street after receiving a report of an unwanted guest.
According to Podgorski, it was initially reported that a man inside the salon was causing a disturbance, however there was no active disturbance when officers arrived at the business.
The man who was the subject of the 911 call told police a family friend was in the salon earlier that morning "and was allegedly the subject of racial insults," Podgorski said.
Norwalk police detectives assumed the investigation based on the allegation of a possible hate incident, according to Podgorski.
"Based on statements from the parties involved in the disturbance and a witness, a dispute arose over services rendered at the nail salon," Podgorski said in a news release. "The female stated that during an argument with a male nail technician, he made disparaging racial comments towards her. This escalated the argument, and the female then struck the male on the side of the head with her hand."
No injuries were reported, Podgorski said.
Hai Bin Zu, 26, was charged with breach of peace as a result of the incident and released on a written promise to appear in court, according to Podgorski.
Podgorski also noted the investigation is ongoing in collaboration with the State's Attorney's Office of G.A. 1 Stamford.
