Norwalk Animal Control Issues Alert About Coyotes

NORWALK, CT — The Norwalk Police Department's animal control division reminds residents coyotes may be more visible than usual at this time of year and recommend taking a few precautions.

In a Facebook post Friday afternoon, animal control said coyote whelping season is underway as Norwalk enters the spring season.

"During this time, coyotes may be more visible than usual, particularly in and around wooded areas, as they care for and protect their young," animal control wrote on Facebook.

According to animal control, coyote pups are typically born in early spring and will begin to leave their dens toward the end of May.

As a result, adult coyotes may be more active and, at times, more protective of their territory, animal control said.

Animal control said they encourage residents to take the following precautions:

• Keep pets on a leash when outdoors, especially near wooded or brush-filled areas.

• Avoid leaving small pets unattended outside.

• Secure trash and remove potential food sources from your property.

"Coyotes are a natural part of our environment and awareness is the best way to ensure the safety of both residents and wildlife," animal control wrote.
