NORWALK, CT — A large sailboat caught fire on Long Island Sound in Norwalk on Sunday, according to the Norwalk Fire Department.
In a news release, Assistant Chief Timothy Reardon said a large sailboat fire was reported around 2:45 p.m. near Belle Island in Norwalk.
When crews arrived in the area, they found a sailboat stern heavily involved in fire, according to Reardon.
The occupants of the boat were brought to safety by the Norwalk Police Marine Division, Reardon said.
In a Facebook post Sunday, police said Marine Unit officers rescued the sole occupant of the boat and tried to extinguish the fire, however it was too large.
As crews worked to extinguish the blaze, marine assets from the Noroton fire and Darien police departments responded to the area to assist due to the fire involvement of the vessel, according to Reardon.
Once the fire was brought under control using boat-mounted pumps and hose streams, the sailboat was towed to Norwalk Cove Marina, Reardon said.
