2 Teens Ejected From Scooter, Injured In Crash With SUV: Norwalk Police

NORWALK, CT — Two teens were injured after being ejected from a scooter during a crash with an SUV Sunday afternoon in Norwalk, according to police.

In a news release, Police Lt. Ramon Tejada said Norwalk Combined Dispatch received multiple reports around 3 p.m. of a crash involving a motorized scooter and an SUV at the intersection of Water Street and Hanford Place.

According to Tejada, a preliminary investigation determined a motorized scooter occupied by two 16-year-olds collided with an SUV that was making a left turn at the intersection.

Both teens were ejected from the scooter as a result of the crash, Tejada said.

The teen operating the scooter sustained life-threatening injuries and the passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to Tejada.

Both teens were taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment, Tejada said.

Members of the department's Crash Reconstruction Unit and Identification Unit assumed the investigation, Tejada said.

According to Tejada, preliminary findings indicate the SUV was traveling northbound on Water Street while the motorized scooter was traveling southbound on Water Street.

The collision occurred within the intersection as the SUV was executing a left turn onto Hanford Place, according to Tejada.

Tejada said neither occupant on the motorized scooter was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

"We would like to remind the public that helmets are one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk and severity of head injuries in crashes involving bicycles, scooters and similar vehicles," Tejada said in a news release. "While the investigation into this collision remains ongoing, wearing a properly fitted helmet can significantly reduce the severity of injuries in the event of a crash."
